Chocolate Day

hot-chocolate-su-1571510-l.jpg

During the hot summer days we can devour popsicles and drink ice tea, but there’s nothing greater than a cup of hot chocolate or a smore around a campfire! Today is Chocolate Day and I encourage you to endulge. But you don’t have to worry about chocolate being unhealthy for you. Studies at Cornell University say that cocoa has twice the amount of antioxidants than are found in red wine! While it’s not recommended as a daily supplement, there’s no reason to endulge yourself every once in a while in this little treat with a few healthy secrets it never told you about.

Firework Safety

fireworks-9.jpg

Today is the 4th of July and that means outdoor grilling, family gatherings and you guessed it, fireworks! If you insist on lighting a spark tonight, make sure to be safe when you’re doing it. The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these tips to have a safe 4th of July:

  • Always read and follow label directions.
  • Have an adult present.
  • Buy from reliable sellers.
  • Use outdoors only.
  • Always have water handy (a garden hose and a bucket).
  • Never experiment or make your own fireworks.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Never re-light a “dud” firework (wait 15 to 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water).
  • Never give fireworks to small children.
  • If necessary, store fireworks in a cool, dry place.
  • Dispose of fireworks properly by soaking them in water and then disposing of them in your trashcan.
  • Never throw or point fireworks at other people.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
  • The shooter should always wear eye protection and never have any part of the body over the firework.
  • Stay away from illegal explosives.

Have a Green 4th of July Party!

    firewks-green.jpg

    • Instead of styrofoam plates and plastic utensils be eco friendly. Use recycleable plates and utensils, or biodegradable. Why not even break out the good plates? You only live once, and washing a dish is easier than adding more junk to the dump.
    • Start the party in the day and make the most of natural light. It’s summer afterall and the weather is beautiful and is the perfect time to show off your gardens and yards.
    • Decorate with reusable decorations. Purchase the good stuff that will last forever and you’ll save your own green in the end. You’ll also save on garbage, and wasted paper products.
    • Serve local foods. Head to your local farmers market and get the freshest ingredients.
    • If you’re having a large group of guests, encourage carpooling.
    • Get the kids involved in the celebrations! Pull them from in front of the television, give them a couple of water guns and let them run wild in the backyard (away from the guests of course). The summer is about being outside and being active!

Have a Happy 4th of July!

How One Happy Housewife Properly Prepared for Surgery

    jtbw.jpg

When Happy Housewife Tiffany (Mittongal) was told she needed surgery to repair an injury to her shoulder that happened years earlier, she wanted to exert all other options. She knew the real risks of surgery, and also knew that it wasn’t a quick fix. Keeping her body healthy overall was important to her recovery, both before and after surgery. This week, Tiffany gets a Gold Star from me for taking charge of her own health! She is a very dear friend of mine and happens to be a personal trainer to many Happy Housewives, and is an inspiration! Though she is still recovering from a shoulder surgery she had just a few weeks ago, I was able to ask her a few questions about the process she went through, and her outlook on health.

    Flabby Abs?

    ab-exercisesx400.jpg

You don’t need to do 100 crunches a day or buy a machine that’ll break the bank to get healthy abs! Using your abdominal muscles in everyday activities can strengthen your core and help with burning fat, toning muscle, and improving breathing and posture! Wen you’re sitting at the computer, cooking at the stove, sweeping the floor or even laying down for a mid-day break (you are taking one aren’t you?), contract your abs by squeezing the muscles, pulling your belly button towards your spine. Hold the contraction as long as you can and then release for ten seconds, then try again. Do this at least fifteen times today. Don’t forget to breathe when you do this exercise. Breathe in deep through your nose until you feel it in your diaphram, and slowly exhale.

Do this everyday and by the end of the week you’ll begin to feel your abs really working!
